Urgent investment in midwives needed in fragile states

To mark International Day of the Midwife, medical aid agency, Merlin, launches All Mothers Matter, a report outlining why, without urgent investment in midwives in fragile states, the Millennium Development Goal for maternal health will not be reached. 50% of women who die in childbirth every year live in fragile states, yet 75% of these could be saved with access to a midwife or emergency obstetric care. With less than one health worker per 1,000 people, fragile states do not have the health workforce or services in place to tackle maternal mortality.
