The National Reference Center (NRC), appointed by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Robert Koch Institute, participates in the coordination of measures in the fight against and the surveillance of tuberculosis (TB). The NRC in Borstel supports clinicians across Germany with high level diagnostics for TB, using genomic data about microbacteria to predict TB resistance and for disease outbreak analysis. This has become particularly important with the high number of refugees settling in the country. On a global scale, the Borstel Supranational Reference Laboratory (SNL) is one of the founding members of the WHO TB Supranational Reference Laboratory Network. As part of this network, the SNL provide diagnostics for low resource countries which have a high prevalence of TB. The SNL also gather global genomic data which can be used by the WHO and other network members to map multi drug resistant TB globally and develop special diagnostics and treatment options.
