There are up to 100 000 new cases of obstetric fistula in women worldwide every year according to the World Health Organisation. An estimated 2 million women in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Arab region, Latin America and the Caribbean are living with this almost entirely preventable injury. Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused by obstructed labour. Women who have obstetric fistula suffer incontinence and this can lead to social isolation. For over 20 years, Swiss urologist, Dr. Charles-Henry Rochat has been developing a treatment, training and prevention model for obstetric fistula.
