The Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) is a trans-Faculty, multi-disciplinary postgraduate research enterprise that operates in the fields of infectious disease and molecular medicine research. Situated on the health sciences campus of the University of Cape Town, the IDM is internationally recognised as able to drive world-class research at the laboratory-clinic-community interface. There are more than 20 member research groups, including 3 major groups: CIDRI (Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Initiative), the DTHF & DTHC (Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation & DTH Centre) and SATVI. Fuelled by HIV, TB notification rates in areas around Cape Town are among the highest in the world, and remain a major cause of death among individuals here, especially those with AIDS. TB, and TB linked to HIV/AIDS, are the primary focus of the majority of IDM research groups. The IDM tackles research from a wide range of scientific and clinical disciplines, collaborating both nationally and internationally, and supported by significant research funding raised by individual members from national and international sources.
