The FoldScope is an origami-based, print-and-fold, optical microscope that can be assembled from a flat sheet of paper. Although it costs less than $1 to make, it can provide 2000x magnification with sub-micron resolution. The Foldscope was developed by a team led by Manu Prakash, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford School of Medicine.[5] The project was funded by several organisations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Twelve Foldscope variants are available, each designed to aid the identification of a particular disease-causing organism.
